Hardware Stores in Penang
It’s always good to have at least some DIY tools handy. In Penang, getting someone to do a job for you due to a plumbing or electrical problem can be quite affordable as compare to some other countries. Though there are quite a number of hardware stores in Penang, but I have listed down only a few which I think is worth checking out.
As the name suggest, this shop sells almost anything related to D.I.Y (Do it Yourself Stuff). It started off by selling only hardware stuff. And now it has extended to electrical, gardening, car accessories, toys, gifts, plastic ware, stationery and many more. You can also get some cheap handicrafts. Mr DIY has almost 80 outlets throughout the whole of West Malaysia, with 2 outlets located in the Island of Penang. One is located inside Island Plaza and the other at Bandar Baru Air Itam. The list of outlets can be found here.
This shop sell electrical accessories, hardware, AV Electronics, Bathroom, Car Accessories, lighting and basically anything that is needed in your house. Prices are pretty reasonable. There are 2 shops in the Island, one in Georgetown and the other at Bayan Lepas. So far I have been getting most of my hardware stuffs here. Also, if you intend to bring some of your electrical equipments that need a transformer to step down the voltage, then this is the place to go. Location of Thye Huat hardware stores can be found here.
Those coming from the USA should be quite well accustomed to Ace Hardware. Currently there is only 1 store which is located inside Queensbay Mall. There are tons of DIY tools that can be found here. Products range from paint, tools, electrical, home goods, hardware, lawn garden, plumbing, automotive care and outdoor living. Things sold here can be a bit pricey compare to the above 2 hardware shops. Click here for store location.
Electrical & Electronic Appliances
An Australian retail selling electrical, computer, furniture and bedding goods. There are currently 2 Harvey Norman retails in the Island of Penang. And both of them are located inside the shopping mall, Queensbay and Gurney Paragon. You can get pretty good bargain on some of the electrical items during their sales or promotional period. Depending on which stores you are at, the bigger store will have an electrical, computer, furniture and bedding section. There is also a photo center located inside here if you intend to develop your digital photos, sometimes at a price much lower than what is offered in other photography shops.
This is a local electrical appliance store which can only be found in Penang and Kedah. SEC has quite a number of stores located here in Penang. One thing to note is that prices of some electrical items can be different from store to store. So it’s good to do a bit of moving around to find out which store gives the cheapest price. You can also purchase the SEC Status Card to get further markdown of prices with exclusive members offer and special discounts. Sign up fee for the Status Card is RM12.
SenQ and Sen Heng are the same company with the former identified as a rebranding measure. However based on my observation, SenQ can only be found in Malls. Usually I will go to SenQ rather than Sen Heng as the former outlet is much bigger. There are currently 2 SenQ outlets located in the island of Penang – Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall. Just like the SEC Status Card, SenQ/Sen Heng also have their own loyalty card which provide you extended warranties and member’s only promotions.
Store locations: SenQ & Sen Heng
